Membership to the Master Gardeners Association of Alberta (MGAA) is open to Alberta residents who have received a Master Gardener certificate from a program recognized by the Society.
Categories of Membership
- Active Members - individuals who have received their Master Gardener certificate, are members in good standing, and annually complete a minimum of 25 volunteer hours of which a minimum of 2 hours are in an administrative capacity, 5 hours in ongoing education and 5 hours in volunteer service to the public. Active members are entitled to receive notice of, attend, and vote at all general meetings of the Society and to hold office.
- Student Members - persons who are currently enrolled in a Master Gardener program recognized by the Society, and are in good standing. This membership can be held until they receive their master gardener certificate but is not to exceed 1 year. Students are entitled to receive notice of, attend general meetings of the Society and are not entitled to vote or hold office.
- Life Members- Master Gardeners, who are in good standing, but are unable to complete their annual volunteer hours but wish to continue to attend meetings and MGAA events. Life members are entitled to receive notice of and attend all general meetings of the Society but are not entitled to vote or hold office.
- Associate Members - Master Gardeners, who are in good standing, and who for reason of health, work, travel or other approved leaves of absence are unable to complete their volunteer hours required for any one year but wish to remain a part of the Society. Associate Members are entitled to receive notice of and attend, but are not entitled to vote at general meetings of the Society and are not entitled to hold office.
- Honorary Members - people from outside the Society recognized by MGAA for their significant contribution to the affairs of the Society. Honorary members are entitled to receive notice of and attend, but not entitled to vote, at general meetings of the Society and are not entitled to hold office.
Annually, MGAA members will complete at least 25 volunteer hours in the categories that are intended to be broad-based covering a wide range of activities that are of interest to the members.
Each member will complete a minimum of 2 hours in an administrative effort, 5 hours in on-going education and training and 5 hours in public service. The remaining 13 hours are in the category of your choice.
- Attend members business meetings
- Attend MGAA AGM
- Promote MGAA at public events
- Prepare MGAA presentations
- Prepare marketing or promotional material for MGAA
- Organize MGAA events, speakers series, tours & field trips
2. Ongoing Education and Training
- Attend lectures, courses, presentations, workshops on garden-related events
- Take horticultural courses from recognized institutes or colleges
- Attend interpretive horticultural walks or tours
3. Public Service
- Provide hands on gardening to a public garden
- Field ‘Ask A Master Gardener’ questions in public venues or online
- Coach and mentor interested gardeners - casual
- Provide Interpretive walks at public gardens
The actual hours are not intended to be prescriptive but again should be in areas that appeal to the individual MGAA member. Volunteer hours used to retain your Master Gardener Designation can also be applied towards MGAA volunteer requirements.
